This National Symposium on Health Data and AI will take place on March 17th -18th 2023 in Christian Medical College, Vellore, a premier medical institution located in Tamil Nadu, India. Being pioneers in adopting digitization of health data, and with most aspects of healthcare practice in the digital platform for more than two decades, we are uniquely placed to host various stakeholders from the country and abroad to deliberate on how the digital health data ecosystems can evolve in India. As we delve into the latest advancements in these fields, let us keep in mind the ethics and responsibilities that come with harnessing the power of data and AI. It is our hope that through open and informed discussions, we can shape the future of healthcare ecosystem in a positive and sustainable way.

Dr. Alexander Thomas

Founder – Patron, Association of Healthcare Providers India (AHPI)

Dr. Thomas is the Founder-Member and President of the Association of National Board Accredited Institutions (ANBAI), Founder-President (2012-2017) and Patron of the Consortium of Accredited Healthcare Organizations (CAHO). He has played a significant part in incorporating healthcare communication among the NABH Accreditation Standards for Hospitals (4th Edition), and has led the expert group on medical education for the National Education Policy (2019) headed by Dr. Kasturirangan.

He initiated the creation of a national Think Tank on Health at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU). At the State level, Dr. Thomas played an important role in developing the State Public Health Policy as the Member-Secretary of its Task Force. He has led committees for NABH accreditation of government hospitals in Karnataka and was awarded the Emeritus Teacher Award by NBE for his distinguished achievements and contributions to the field of Medical Education (2014).

Prof. Andre Dekker

Professor and Head, Clinical Data Science MAASTRO, Netherlands

Prof. Andre Dekker, PhD (1974) is a medical physicist and professor of Clinical Data Science at Maastricht University Medical Center and Maastro Clinic in The Netherlands. His Clinical Data Science research group (50 staff) focuses on 1) federated FAIR data infrastructures, 2) AI for health outcome prediction models and 3) applying AI to improve lives of patients and citizens. Prof. Dekker has authored over 200 publications, mentored more than 30 PhD students and holds multiple awards and patents on the topic of federated data and AI. He has held visiting scientist appointments at universities and companies in the UK, Australia, Italy, USA and Canada. 

Mrs. Anitha Sheba Rachel A

Systems Manager, Computerized Hospital Information Processing Service (CHIPS), Medical Informatics, CMC Vellore. 

Mrs. Anitha Sheba Rachel is an experienced IT systems manager with 20+ years in the IT field. She has accumulated knowledge on planning, developing and maintaining Health Information systems connecting various critical structures of CMC.  Her major contributions include continuous development and integration of ‘Clinical WorkStation’- a patient information/management software and EMR portal used by clinicians in CMC. In-Patient – Admission, Discharge and Transfer (ADT) and Dietary Module for automating admission, discharge and the transfer process of a patient is organised seamlessly with this. LIS (Laboratory information System) for handling various clinical laboratory operations such as Sample management, Instrument and application integration for medical equipment, Electronic data exchange between inter/intra departments and HIS of CMC. She also worked on Doctor and Procedure Appointments portals.  Apart from working on clinical IT infrastructure Mrs Anitha has worked on CHRIS Card, a patient ID card used for all payments in CMC&H Vellore. Implementing One patient, One card. And worked on several other administrative IT infrastructure for HR, Finance, Purchase and Material Management, Inventory Management and ‘Office WorkStation’ for CMC admin staffs.

Prof. Balaraman Ravindran

Head, Robert Bosch Centre IIT-Madras

Professor B. Ravindran heads the Robert Bosch Centre for Data Science & Artificial Intelligence (RBCDSAI) at IIT Madras. He is the Mindtree Faculty Fellow and Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Madras. Currently, his research interests are centred on learning from and through interactions and span the areas of geometric deep learning and reinforcement learning. He received his PhD from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst and his Master’s degree from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He is a senior member of the Association for Advancement of AI (AAAI) and an ACM Distinguished Member.


Professor, Radiation Oncology Unit II, Ida B Scudder Cancer Centre, Christian Medical College, Vellore.

Dr. Balu Krishna is a radiation oncologist and faculty at Christian Medical College since 2008.  His interests and experience include cancers of the upper GI tract, head and neck, thorax, and prostate. He also has experience in cancer research, clinical trials, radiomics, artificial intelligence, function sparing radiation, mouse tumor models, and immunotherapy.  

His major achievements include winning the Young Clinical Poster Award at ESTRO 35 in Italy in 2016 and receiving the Best Paper award at the Young Radiation Oncologists Conference in Kerala, India in 2014. He has also been a research scholar at the University of Washington Seattle and Seattle Cancer Care Alliance Proton Therapy Center from 2017-2019, an AVON Global Breast Cancer Scholar at Johns Hopkins University in 2012 and an ECCO-AACR Scholar for Methods in Clinical Cancer Research in FLIMS, Switzerland.  

Dr. Balu Krishna has been involved in three major grants and projects (DBT, ICMR, and I-DAIR), and has authored 30 publications. He is also the clinical lead for QIRAIL, an AI Lab in Radiation Oncology at CMC Vellore

Prof. Dipti Misra Sharma

Language Technologies Research Centre, IIIT Hyderabad

Prof. Dipti Misra Sharma, is a Professor Emeritus at Language Technologies Research Centre (LTRC), IIIT-Hyderabad having research and teaching experience in the field of Computational Linguistics and Natural Language Processing. Her research interests include machine translation including Speech to Speech machine translation with a focus on Indian languages and developing tools and data resources for Indian Languages. Her areas of interests are Machine translation, Indian language resource development. She has successfully led projects such as Indian language to Indian language machine translation system(ILMT) Phase II, a consortium project with 12 institutes and 11 language pairs; Development of dependency treebanks for Indian languages; Translation of Swayam courses into 8 Indian languages, Multilingual document summarization in quasi stationary environment, Speech to Speech Machine Translation (Pilot).   Currently leading a project on Machine translation for 9 Indian language pairs, including English, as part of Bhashini.

Prof. Gautam Menon

Dean of Research, Ashoka University, New Delhi

Gautam Menon is a Professor of Physics and Biology at Ashoka University, Sonepat and the Director of its Centre for Climate Change and Sustainability (3CS), a Professor (on lien) at the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai  as well as an Adjunct Professor at the TIFR, Mumbai. He was a Visiting Professor at the Mechanobiology Institute of the National University of Singapore between 2011 and 2013.  He has been awarded the Swarnajayanti Fellowship of the DST, was named a DAE-SRC Outstanding Research Investigator of the, has been named an Outstanding Referee of the American Physical Society. He is an elected Fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (India). Apart from his scientific work, he has been involved in making science accessible to the public, in using mathematical and computational models to inform health policy, and in mathematical modeling and public outreach regarding the COVID-19 pandemic in India.

Dr Harpreet Singh

Scientist, Indian Council of Medical Research

Dr. Singh is a technical professional withhas 15+ years of experience in handling and analyzinganalysing Next Generation Sequence data, Genotyping by Sequencing, Epitope prediction, Comparative Sequence Analysis, Annotations, Phylogeny, Database and web service development.

He developed targeted therapeutics development based on gene signatures, biomarkers and drivers of disease pathogenesis. Dr Singh has also developed Data Portal and Data Analysis at ICMR AIIMS Computational Genomics Centre

Prof. Jayanthi Sivaswamy

Professor, IIIT, Hyderabad

Professor Jayanthi Sivaswamy is Raj Reddy Professor at International Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIITH). Trained as Electrical Engineer, she has been working in the medical image computing field for over 15 years. She has extensive experience in developing computer aided diagnostic (CAD) solutions to help screen for eye diseases, lung cancer and covid based on images from different modalities. Besides CAD, her current work focusses on understanding population-based differences in aging of the human brain and developing VR-based solution for anatomy education

Dr Manisha Mantri

Joint Director, Centre for Development of Advanced Computing & Project Director and Co-investigator of National Resource Centre for EHR Standards (NRCeS) project by MoHFW

Mrs. Manisha Mantri works with HPC- Medical & Bio-informatics Applications Group (HPC-M&BA) at Centre for Development of Advanced Computing (C-DAC) Pune, India. She leads activities of the National Resource Centre for EHR Standards (NRCeS) in India. She is a veteran software architect with more than 14 years of experience in the design, development, and delivery of healthcare products and solutions. She has deep knowledge of health data interoperability standards including SNOMED CT, DICOM, HL7 v2.x, CCD, FHIR, and LOINC and healthcare processes. She is co-author of a book titled, ‘Electronic Health Record: Standards, Coding Systems, Frameworks, and Infrastructures’ by IEEE press, Wiley Publications. Manisha also represents organization and India at various international and national bodies including SNOMED International, openEHR International, Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), HIMSS India, and HL7 India. She has been recognized as HIMSSFuture50 Class of 2021 by HIMSS.

Dr. Mehdi Snene

CEO, I-DAIR, Geneva

Dr. Mehdi Snène, currently the CEO a.i at I-DAIR, is a digital health expert and scientist with a strong research focus on neuroscience, cognition, aging, and machine learning. He has founded and managed a mental and brain health research laboratory at the University of Geneva with a great track record of diversified National, European, and International research funding. He has been working on frontier technology in digital health, with a strong emphasis on Quality of Life and Quality of End of Life of patients diagnosed with neurodegenerative diseases. He has led several clinical trials in palliative care, rehabilitation care, and geriatric care with a particular interest in digital biomarkers of pain and discomfort.

He joined the EPFL at the project coordination office, for the scientific and technical coordination of the Human Brain project before joining I-DAIR as the R&D Director and deputy CEO. Currently, he is in charge of the monitoring and development of a large multilateral research projects portfolio in partnerships with multiple international organizations such as the WHO, UNICC, UNITAR, and ITU. He is leading, inter alia, the development of hardware and software components of a clinical machine learning research infrastructure (TRI) for LMIC, the development of an immersive learning environment for AI/ML in medical schools, and the development of digital public goods and benchmarking for digital health and mental health.

Mr. Raman Jit Singh Chima

Asia Pacific Policy Director, Senior International Counsel and and Global Cybersecurity Lead, Access Now

Raman Jit Singh Chima serves as Asia Policy Director and Senior International Counsel at Access Now, leading the organisation’s work in protecting an open internet and advancing the rights of users at risk across the region. He is a founding volunteer with the SaveTheInternet.in Net Neutrality Coalition and assisted the legal team involved in the Supreme Court of India’s landmark Shreya Singhal v. Union of India judgment on internet free speech. Prior to this, he served as Policy Counsel and Government Affairs Manager with Google based in Delhi across 2010-2014 and advised government, industry bodies and academia on technology policy issues.

Dr. Uma Nambiar

Chairperson, Digital Health India Association

Dr. Uma Nambiar, Chairperson, DHIA (Digital Health India Association); Executive Director, Gimcare Hospital, Kannur; Vice-President, Telemedicine Society of India, Kerala Chapter; Knowledge Partner, AHBS(Africa Health Business Symposium) and Non-Executive Director, Hemas Group of Hospitals, Sri Lanka is specialized in strategic consulting, health care policies, commissioning new hospitals, process reengineering in existing hospitals, process standardization and quality in healthcare, healthcare IT, healthcare administration and clinical/biomedical engineering. She holds an M.Ch degree in Neurosurgery and MBBS from Armed Forces Medical College.
